Site Survey

Prior to the commencement of the planning for any project, both the customer and the contractor need to have a clear understanding of the conditions, which could prevail during the execution of the project works? To achieve this understanding, it is essential that an accurate site survey is carried out by experienced personnel and that the results and implications of that survey are transmitted to all concerned parties in a clear and concise manner. Rohn Products International considers the site survey a critical milestone requirement for the successful implementation of any project. Because of this importance, we hand pick highly trained experienced personnel to conduct survey work as we recognize the need to insure the quality of the information. Due to our methodology of conveying the data to engineers in remote locations we accurately recreate the conditions of the site on drawings by people who have never seen the site before, eliminating the need for multiple visits to confirm or gather forgotten information. We can then plan the implementation strategies needed to construct the site correctly the first time.

Tower Mapping

Due to more restrictive permitting processes and growing objections from environmentalists it is faster and less expensive to upgrade an existing site rather than go through installing a new site. The above situation has also been influenced by changes in the specifications and Building code/design standards that have been applied to the design of new structures and the upgrading of existing structures. Due to changes in ownership and other related issues often times the original tower design has simply been lost. To overcome these issues, Rohn has invested in design programs, measuring equipment and training personnel that can carry out mapping and re-analysis of existing structures in a matter of days. Rohn utilizes portable NDT equipment that can measure the materials hardness and can provide an accurate basis for the analysis. At all stages of the tower mapping process on the site, photographs are taken for record purposes The measurements taken are accurately noted at the site location and then mapped into CAD drawings of the tower sections at our office. The concept of mapping a structure and re-analyzing the same can, if performed in a proper manner, provide a safe and cost effective solution to allow for the upgrading of that structure, as opposed to the complete removal and replacement.

Engineering and Design

RPI’s professional engineering staff has the capability to design any type, and height of tower structure. In addition to tower design, RPI’s services include preliminary and final tower foundation designs (based on soil reports and site conditions). Because RPI’s engineering is all in-house, changes are quickly made to amend designs when unplanned surprises are identified in the field. These changes are then transmitted to the installation teams reducing costly downtime, effectively saving weeks from procedures used in the past.

Soil Testing

Soil testing reports can be misleading. It is the nature of Geotechnical Engineering that soil variability within a relatively small area can be significant. Ideally, soil testing should be performed at the exact location of the proposed tower. In many cases, historical soil data from the vicinity of the proposed tower can be reliably used; however, this requires experience and judgment from both the provider of the geotechnical data and the foundation design engineer. Use of previously supplied data that is not directly taken from the site being evaluated can in many cases lead to unintended inappropriate foundation design for the actual site being constructed. Although the paperwork or documentation is deemed valid or appropriate, unless there are photographs or other proof that the actual site was bored and properly tested, there may be very costly repercussions. RPI provides the experience required to evaluate, conduct and confirm all phases of the methodology used for the soil test results to provide the most efficient and appropriate foundation design and to perform the foundation installation.

Foundation

RPI’s capabilities related to foundation work include design, installation, inspection, condition and capacity assessment and repair. Site clearing, leveling, access road work, rock removal, top gravel, and fencing are all pre requisites for a proficient foundation installation service. RPI’s capital equipment includes large drilling machines, boom trucks, and earth moving equipment, concrete mixers/delivery trucks, and numerous support vehicles that allow our works to continue without ever relying on outside contractors or experiencing equipment delays.

Installation

RPI has erected many of the tallest towers in the world. Our teams have the knowledge, experience, and equipment to accomplish the job. RPI’s installation capabilities extend to all types of platforms, mounts, lifts and elevators, antennas/dishes and complex broadcast antenna arrays, cable runs, solar panels, and any other tower support equipment, including ground based equipment shelters.

Project Management

There are some major global dominant project management firms that are known for large project management. When scrutinized, the overhead and specialization required to do multiple or large rollouts and the project management associated to these can in reality be better managed and cost effectively completed by companies that specialize in large telecommunication projects, and their management and not just large civil works providers, as these are very different skill sets and require a different approach, experience and management capability. Rohn Products International can do single sites and multiple deployments, with up to 500 plus sites and has the experience to scale effectively as the job requires.

Refurbishment - Structural Enhancement

RPI has developed standardized solutions for strengthening common angular and tubular structures to restore the structure either to its original load capacity, or a new increased load capacity. Customized solutions are also available from our team of in-house design engineers for less common structures. These modifications are not limited to structural load changes but also to repairs and defects that may be due to corrosion or other damage. In some cases, tower upgrades may be required to bring the structures into compliance with the latest tower design standards. When foundation repairs are necessary, RPI employs Non Destructive Test (NDT) techniques and equipment to determine the strength of the existing concrete, quantity of embedded reinforcements, and the size of foundation members. By combining NDT with a visual examination of exposed foundation elements, RPI can provide engineered solutions to upgrade the load bearing capacities of the existing foundations while upgrading the existing structure.
